Summary
Shawn Stevenson sits down with chiropractor Dr. Xavier Tipler to explore why chiropractic care goes far beyond treating back pain. Dr. Tipler explains that chiropractic focuses on the nervous system -- the master system controlling every function in the body -- and that removing interference (subluxations) in the spine allows the body's innate intelligence to heal itself. He draws on the breaker box analogy: if power is cut off at the source, fixing individual appliances won't help. The conversation covers a wide range of conditions that patients have resolved through chiropractic, including childhood sleep disorders, asthma symptoms, and digestive issues. Dr. Tipler shares a compelling case of a 10-year-old girl who hadn't slept properly for years despite being on multiple medications including blood pressure drugs; after a month of chiropractic adjustments, she was sleeping normally without medication. The episode also touches on how the nervous system is the first system to develop in utero, the role of physical, chemical, and emotional stress in creating subluxations, and why a holistic approach combining nutrition, sleep, and spinal health creates the optimal environment for the body to heal.
Key Points
- Chiropractic focuses on the nervous system, not just back pain -- removing spinal interference allows the body to heal itself
- Subluxations (nervous system interference) are caused by physical, chemical, and emotional stress accumulated over a lifetime
- The spine houses the spinal cord, which carries roughly 7-8 trillion nerve fibers connecting the brain to every organ
- A 10-year-old with chronic insomnia was healed through chiropractic after years of failed pharmaceutical interventions
- The nervous system is the first system to develop in the womb, underscoring its fundamental role in health
- Organ problems often express as spinal pain due to reflex mechanisms connecting the spine to organs
- Creating the optimal internal environment through nutrition, sleep, and spinal alignment enables the body's innate healing capacity
Key Moments
The nervous system as the master system controlling all body functions
Dr. Xavier Tipler explains that chiropractic focuses on caring for the nervous system, which controls and regulates every function in the human body, creating an environment conducive to healing.
"And a friend of mine, you know, he was like, look, dude, you need to come and see my chiropractor. At the time, never heard of chiropractor before, never heard the term. So it was something, it was definitely something new to me. And just that experience and the education that that doctor gave me really started to change, change my whole thought process. I don't really think it changed my thought process, but it really changed my overall way of feeling about how I want to take care of my body. Wow. That's so powerful because that experience changed the trajectory of your life. Exactly. Put you in like, I'm going to chiropractic school. Going to chiropractic school. Wow. That's so powerful, man. Well, this brings to the conversation, you know, the word itself, you know, what is, what's the purpose of chiropractic and how does this stuff even work, man? I know it's so much deeper than most people think so. What is chiropractic and how does it actually work? Well, you know, the purpose of chiropractic to me is to create an environment within the body that's conducive to healing."
The spine as the body's breaker box protecting the nervous system
Dr. Tipler uses the analogy of a breaker box to explain why chiropractors focus on the spine — it houses the nervous system, and addressing the source rather than symptoms is key to restoring function.
"And just so happens the spinal cord, the brain, most important system in the body is the only organ in the body protected by thick bones. So as chiropractors, the reason we focus on the spine is because it houses that system. It's just basically like your electrical box in the house, the breaker box. You know you have all these breaker switches the power goes out somewhere in the house you can change your light bulbs, change different things all day but if the power has been shut off or there's been some interruption that triggers that breaker switch you have to go to the source. You can't keep trying to treat the symptoms, which is usually what we kind of deal with in the current health care system."
10-year-old girl's sleep restored through chiropractic adjustments
Dr. Tipler shares a case of a 10-year-old who had not slept well since birth, was on multiple medications including blood pressure pills, and after a month of chiropractic adjustments was sleeping normally without any medication.
"I just can't believe that happened that quickly. Well, there you go. There you go. I'll tell you one of my most interesting cases, like most people, pain is the main thing that brings them in. Well, I had a young girl and I think I spoke to you about this. This young girl, she was 10 years old and her mother was coming into the office first and she was telling me about her daughter. And, you know, she's 10 and she hasn't slept since she was basically born you know since she was very little so for I would say seven or eight years she was having trouble sleeping at night and without really knowing the history of how this little girl was raised or anything like that it was kind of baffling so I had to bring her in, you know, so we could evaluate her. And it was just horrifying to see the things that have been experimented with her in order to just get a 10 year old girl to sleep. So they diagnosed her with ADD, ADHD, all these different things. And she was taking the Ritalin, the any medication, you know, for for ADD, ADHD, she was on. And none of those worked. So then, this has never been heard of, I've never heard of this before, but they prescribed her high blood pressure medication. Right, yeah, you told me about that. 10 years old. I couldn't understand why, but, you know, being medically minded, you think of why people are prescribed high blood pressure medication to drop their blood pressure."
Christopher Reeves analogy shows spine-body connection
Using the Christopher Reeves spinal cord injury as an example, Dr. Tipler illustrates how severing the brain-body connection through the spine causes progressive organ failure, demonstrating on a dramatic scale what subluxations do on a smaller level throughout life.
"Yeah. So everything from that point below started to die. Right. And what happened to Christopher Reeves is really what happens to us on a much smaller basis throughout our entire lives. So from the time that we're born until the time that we leave this earth, we're constantly bombarded by the stress that continues to depress our nervous system. So that's why it's important with what you do and teaching people and helping people to eat properly to nourish the system that keeps them alive or to get the proper rest so that that system can rejuvenate itself and be ready to get you, you know, and get you ready for the next day ahead or the next years that you have in life. So there's a lot of things that come into play when you talk about being whole and staying whole. Chiropractic definitely, I think, fits into that. That was the best imagery. I think it's so symbolic. I've got the light bulb now. it's so symbolic i've got the light bulb now it's so symbolic that we'd have a situation like superman superman being cut down to being in a wheelchair and slowly losing function you know i think it's such a great symbolism for us and such a blessing and gift for us and the thing was he continued to give and to be a beneficial presence on the planet. And I think one of the messages we really need to take from that is like, what really happened? How did this actually break down? How did Superman fall? You know, and it was through this cut in communication between his brain and his spinal cord and the rest of the body. Exactly. It wasn't kryptonite. Exactly. Wow. So powerful. I would add that the energy that is given, the energy that is sent out as well, that communicates with all of those organs, and as you said, Sean, he's still contributing on this earth, to this earth, that energy, what is it all for each day? You know, where is it all coming from?"
