Soma Breath’s Journey to Success - Niraj Naik

The Jason Marc Campbell Business Podcast with Niraj Naik 2025-07-14

Summary

Niraj Naik, founder of SOMA Breath and known as "The Renegade Pharmacist," joins Jason Marc Campbell to discuss his journey from community pharmacist to breathwork entrepreneur. After seven years dispensing medications, Niraj developed ulcerative colitis and was given the choice of colon removal or experimental drugs. Instead, he turned to pranayama and Ayurveda, healing himself within months and discovering the power of combining breathwork with music. The conversation explores how Niraj built SOMA Breath into a global movement with thousands of certified instructors, his collaboration with Wim Hof, and how Cambridge University reached out to study SOMA Breath's effects on the brain. They discuss the entrepreneurial mindset behind scaling a wellness practice, the importance of authentic selling through personal transformation stories, and why creating something genuinely great makes sales effortless.

Key Points

  • Niraj worked seven years as a community pharmacist before developing ulcerative colitis, a stress-related autoimmune disease
  • He healed himself using pranayama breathing techniques, Ayurveda, and meditation without surgery or drugs
  • SOMA Breath combines ancient pranayama with music, creating a modality for altered states and unconscious mind reprogramming
  • He trained with a yogi doctor in the Himalayas who co-created the SOMA Breath curriculum
  • Cambridge University independently reached out to study SOMA Breath after seeing initial research by Dr. Jeff Tarrant
  • The Jeff Tarrant study showed SOMA Breath works similarly to psilocybin and MDMA for treating depression
  • SOMA Breath has grown to several thousand certified instructors worldwide through word of mouth
  • Niraj emphasizes that authentic selling comes from truly believing in the product through personal transformation

Key Moments

Healing ulcerative colitis through pranayama and breathwork

Niraj describes how simple pranayama breathing techniques had an immediate effect on turning off stress and relieving pain from his ulcerative colitis, sending him down a rabbit hole of ancient practices that led to full healing within months.

"I had to kind of let go of that and I had no other choice. So I just tried a few of the simple things she taught me from, firstly, it was the breathing techniques from Pranayama. And it had such an immediate effect of turning off the stress. I couldn't believe it. It was like relieving pain, turning off stress. Symptoms were going down a bit."

SOMA Breath as a pharmacy of breathing techniques

Niraj explains the vision behind SOMA Breath as a comprehensive system offering diverse breathing techniques accessible to everyone, demystifying ancient knowledge into a scientifically sound and fun framework.

"And that's Soma Breath, where it's more of a pharmacy for eating techniques. You don't have to jump in ice baths if you don't want. You know, you don't even have to jump on a yoga mat if you don't want. There's a lot of different techniques that you can find that work for you, wherever you are, whatever state situation you're in."

Cambridge University study and scientific validation

Niraj explains how Cambridge University independently reached out to study SOMA Breath after being inspired by Dr. Jeff Tarrant's initial research showing similarities to psilocybin and MDMA effects on the brain.

"They actually reached out to me because, again, it's all about someone doing something great. There was a scientist called Jeff Tarrant who reached out to me as well. He loved the method. So he goes, I want to study this. So he did a first study and he showed how we work similar in a way to psilocybin MDMA used to treat depression. And then Cambridge University got inspired by that and did a bigger study."

Breathwork upgrades mitochondria and energy production

Niraj explains how SOMA Breath's pranayama sequence works on an internal physical level to upgrade mitochondrial function and energy production, which has remarkable effects on overall health.

"So first, what it is, is a sequence of pranayama techniques that gets you into this altered state. But those techniques also work on an internal physical level, upgrading the mitochondria, how we produce energy in the body. Everything is energy, right? So if we manipulate the energy in the body, we optimize how we produce energy. It has a remarkable effect over all of your overall health."
